This week at Jamboree we have a taster session for our upcoming four part corse that runs from May 18th til June 8th. Pete Ayres and Aila Floyd from shag Pile will be leading the class with live piano accompaniment from Ewan Bleach. The evening will then continue with a 3 part set from The Cable Street Rag Band until 11:30, with a free jam until 12:30 so plenty of time to try out your new moves!
Collegiate shag was popularised in the 1920s and 30s in the USA and is characterised by its fast footwork, and as such it can be danced to extremely uptempo music. It is danced in a wide variety of styles, from expansive to compact, elegant to frantic. The gleeful feeling of Shag was often played up for comedic effect in Hollywood movies, and its strong shapes made it a perfect match for animation.
